Welcome to my regular "NO B.S." newsletter which I hope will offer some useful advice, helpful tips, reviews, humour and tell it like it is!

April/May/June 2010

Hello Folks,
A lot to talk about for this Qtr Newsletter!!
Our Cinema 360 Install Division in the Algarve has been going great guns, we have just finished two Home Cinemas last month, one a THX ULTRA 2 install, both look and perform stunning.
One cinema I  used AEs in-wall and in-ceilings, Onkyo receiver, 2.35.1 fixed curved 8ft screen with a  Panasonic AE4000, the THX ULTRA 2 install has a 10ft wide tab tensioned electric screen!!!
Custom programmed Phillips Prontos in both!!***I shall post pics and vids soon.
Certainly in any install, the Pronto is a must and though this aspect is oft overlooked, can create that wow factor with one button press and for example, the whole system turns on, lights dim and Air-con pre sets to an agreed room temp!
Another huge asset is a media centre or server, Projectiondreams has the Cinema 360 club membership where customers as club members can have 100 plus Blu-rays pre-loaded from the Projectiondreams library, so though the media centre/server cost is high about 8k you can have saved 2k in Blu ray costs for a fraction of that with the membership!
Membership can be SILVER, GOLD or PLATINUM .and start at  500 euros.
Now 3D,..Avatar was stunning ,Clash of the Titans appalling***hastily remastered 2D really.
The Samsing 3d t.v.s are superb, with their 2d to 3d mode really effective, but the truth is UNTIL 3d is available without glasse sit will be niche and headache inducing when viewing over 2 hours!
Having said this, 3D is meant for the large screen, an immersive experience, so expect to see 3d, curved ,2.35.1 aspect ratio Cinema 360 installs very shortly!!!
Blu Ray...where are the major titles?
What we need ...NOW...for European release..
1. Dances with wolves..236minute version.***yes I know there’s the french version with french     subtitles when the Sioux are speaking!
2. Lawrence of Arabia
3. Star Wars movies
4. L.O.T.R. Movies directors cut,
5. Abyss
6. Showboat
To name a few...but I must admit to being miffed when an inferior version is released, only for a few months later to have a better version released...mind you, I’ve been through this UPGRADE PROCESS many times right from Laserdisc days..serves me right for being a movie nut..
I’ve stopped selling Lexicon products because recently I’ve become a bit dismayed with the quality, most are rebadged HK products it seems with an expensive faceplate and recently there have been a few exposes of the almost identical similarity between the innards when HK and Lexicon variants are compared.
The Lexicon blu ray player was I believe an OPPO for about 5 times the price..what’s going on Lexicon?
Having said this, this practice is rife in the a.v. World ,the Outlaw, the Emotiva and the Sunfire processor are all the same base model from the far east with different face plates and name badge that’s all..
But the problem is, smaller specialist companies cannot develop products to technologically keep up with the likes of Yamaha, Sony, Onkyo, Denon and Pioneer ..So they have to outsource more and more...from the same places...
Quality is fading fast, it’s about quantity now, bells and whistles, 100 different sound modes, gimmickry...one company that breaks this rule is THETA, the best a.v. Processors in the world, upgradeable through card structure..a product for life..pricey, yes..but awesome and my personal favourite  processor in the world..

Well, that’s it for now,
Vince
